Does any one have experience requesting an amendment for suspension because parental leave?

Since the suspension will take effect the day the notification is received by the [Commission][Agency], should I start the process, requesting amendment, the same day of my labour? Or should I do it before? Thanks, any comment based on previous experience will be really helpful. Lucía
