Greetings for the National Holiday in Bulgaria - the Day of the Cyrillic alphabet

The May 24-th is the National Holiday in Bulgaria - celebrateing the Day of the Cyrillic alphabet  and commemorating the development of the Cyrillic alphabet by the brothers Cyril and Methodius in the 855 AD.

Sofia. Bulgaria is celebrating the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Literature. On this day, we honour the work of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius. In 855 Cyril and Methodius designed an alphabet, the Glagolitic, and translated sacred books needed in early Christian Bulgaria. In 1851, the Bulgarian school in Plovdiv organised the first celebration dedicated to Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The initiative of the Plovdiv teachers was endorsed in other cities in the 1860s. Over time, 24 May became a celebration of Bulgarian enlightenment. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church canonised Cyril and Methodius as saints for the translation of the Bible and the spread of Christianity among Slavs.

Numerous Cyrillic alphabets are based on the Cyrillic script. The early Cyrillic alphabet was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire during the 9th century AD at the Preslav Literary School by Saint Clement of Ohrid and Saint Naum and replaced the earlier Glagolitic script developed by the Byzantine theologians Cyril and Methodius. It is the basis of alphabets used in various languages, past and present, in parts of Southeastern Europe and Northern Eurasia, especially those of Slavic origin, and non-Slavic languages influenced by Russian. As of 2011, around 252 million people in Eurasia use it as the official alphabet for their national languages. About half of them are in Russia. Cyrillic is one of the most-used writing systems in the world.
