Snacks:

Belgium is famous for his "frietkot" (fry shacks), a place where you can eat French fries on the go. It is typically served with mayonnaise and a meaty sidedish such as a Bicky Burger or curryworst special. However, sauces like joppiesaus, ketchup, tartaar, or andalouse are adored by Belgians too.

If you crave a sandwich, you can try ‘Pasvite’ in the Tiensestraat 14. However, chainstores like Panos are scattered around the city.

Low budget (< € 20) :

  • Rotis (Wieringstraat 2): Known for its cozy atmosphere, spare ribs and chicken prepared on charcoal grill.

< >El Sombrero, (Lei 25): Tasteful Mexican food. Students get 10 % discount. Toeareg, (Parijsstraat 37): North African kitchen.  De Werf, (Hogeschoolplein 5). Popular restaurant amongst students, with friendly service. Würst, (Margarethaplein 1). This fancy hotdog restaurant is run by the famous Belgian chef Jeroen Meus who has a cooking show on TV. Though we classify this as low budget, you might need to buy 2 or 3 hotdogs to satisfy your needs.Kokoon's (Meiersstraat 1): French/Belgian kitchen, very tasteful, nice setting and friendly service. PepeNero, (Muntstraat 19): Great Italian food. Ellis, (Naamsestraat 5). Tasty hamburgers. Oesterbar, (Muntstraat 23): Fresh fish and crustaceans. Beluga, (Krakenstraat 12): French/Belgian kitchen. De 3 Tonghen, (Busleidengang 6a, Vismarkt): Spanish/Portuguese kitchen.

Bars:

The centre of Leuven is one big pub. Almost every building on the Old Market Square (Oude Markt) is a bar, that's why this place is called the longest bar in the world! Belgium has a rich beer tradition (more than 2000 different beers are brewed in Belgium), so ask the bartender for his/her suggestions. Recommended are the Trappist beers (e.g. Westmalle).

If you can't choose a bar, here are some suggestions

Just a beer:

  • Bar Louis (Grote Markt).

< >De Blauwe Kater : Jazz café with 99 different Belgian beers. The Capital: They offer 2000 different kinds of Belgian Beers. Karément: Trendy bar transforms into a club at later hoursMetafoor: Very known bar by the PhD students of LeuvenDe Rector: A place where students gather.  Allegria: Good music and nice atmosphere.  De Bierkelder: Not very cozy, but this is the place to dance and drink till dawn.  Café Manger: Every Monday-, and Wednesday evening this restaurant organizes salsa-parties.  Seven Oaks (Hanengang): Very short walking distance from the Old Market Square – Notorious for being the very last place people go to on their night out.
