Information and Data Access...

2 min read May 13, 2015
Information and Data Access Working Group request for information. IS YOUR PROFILE 100% COMPLETE? The IDA-WG met in Leuven on 2 May, to discuss the use, accessibility, and future of the MCAA portal. Currently, a number of search facilities are not working well, and it has been identified that this is mainly due to a number of member profiles being less than 100% complete. In order for search facilities to work well (e.g., searches by Field of Research or Current Location), we need members to complete all the areas of requested information. Why is so much information requested? It not only allows members to locate you and your research more easily, it enables the gathering of (protected) data on who is doing what with Marie Curie funding (and where), and to map our research culture and success stories more easily. Obviously, this portal is a work in progress, and we appreciate that improvements are needed. If you have suggestions, please include them in the comments below. Please also include any comments you have on the look of the portal; things you like, that you think could be improved (and how), as well as features you'd like to see in the future, as we build our collective profile and presence via the portal. Many thanks.

As Elizabeth said, we need your help to improve the MCAA database and the portal!  Your contribution is key for these developments ! Complete your profile as much as you can, let's know issues and suggestions.  Thank you!

. Hi, i subscribed to the MCAA portal in 2012, soon after I won my grant. At that rime the portal was not quite working so  I stopped looking at it. Just few weeks ago I visited again the web site and found all these great improvements.... This is just to say that maybe people like me are not fully aware of all the new features of the website, and that is why they do not complete their profiles. An informative email on the portal activities and features could help. Hope this helps. Valentina

Dear Elizabeth,

At the German chapter (and most other chapters), we have difficulty knowing who to invite to join the chapter. The nationality is normally available but the current country and host country are very often never filled out. It makes it difficult to make contact with Fellows, when they first join the MCAA. The chapter structure is probably most useful to members who have just joined. Is there any way to require the current country and host country to be filled out on joining the MCAA just like nationality? I understand the information level is set at a minimum to not frighten off prospective MCAA members but many never get further than the minimum.

As regards data, it is even more difficult to find who is interested in particular topics. How do I find people who are interested in microbiology or microfluidics or medieval history or climate change within MCAA? There is a medieval history working group and a climate change one. At the German chapter, we have the idea of organizing activities based on general research areas and then on top of that forming working groups based on those topics. Then people can join the groups that are relevant to their research interests. The obvious place to start is "Life Sciences" as this is the general research topic with the most members but this applies to all research interests. If we can organize relevant activities, we can link that to gaining the "data" we need to build networks.

We have organized a career seminar for 10th June. Of the people who have registered about half weren't previously MCAA members and most weren't chapter members. We have asked these people to join MCAA and become members of the chapter. We can do similar things to stream people into working groups based on research topics.

Warm regards,

Brian

Hi Brian. Many thanks for taking the time to alert to this and for sharing your comments; they are really helpful. Good luck with your seminar!

Hi everyone. Just a little reminder to ask for your feedback on the portal, and to encourage you all to get your profile data up to 100%. Many thanks indeed to those of you who have already done so. If you could send us your comments by 30 June 2015, that would be really useful and enable the IDA-WG to collate your comments during early July. Thank you!

I am puzzled by the two separate headings in the Profile section for Alumni Data and EC Almuni Data - both request information regarding Marie Curie fellowships. What is meant to be the difference between them, and could the headings be changed to more effectively express this intention?

The original idea was that the 'Alumni Data' would be filled in by the individual member, while the 'EC Alumni Data' would be automtically generated by extracting information from official EC databases. For a whole string of reasons, this has not yet proved possible, and it does not look as if this will be feasible in the short term. In the light of this, and of other issues that have come to light over time, we are planning to overhaul the interface for member data. This has all sorts of technical implications that we are sorting through, so please bear with us for a while.

thanks for that. possibilly relevant information: I have a past Marie Curie fellowship (FP6) and a forthcoming one; so I had though to put the old one under Alumni, the new one (when active) under EC alumni... i.e. however you overhaul thing, it could be useful to allow for multiple entries.

Quite a few people have multiple MC experiences (something we did not realise when the original system was designed), so this is certainly one aspect we now plan to change.

Dear Elizabeth,

My post here is more on the theme of accessing information about our chapter members.

Would it be possible to add Chapter/Group Membership as a refinement option on the Find Alumni page, https://www.mariecuriealumni.eu/alumni-browse?

At the moment, the German chapter is beginning to organize an event for researchers working in the Humanities and Social Sciences. If we could focus on all members that are members of the chapter and have held a fellowship in the Social Sciences we would have an initial idea about who we should contact. It is good to know which of the current members might be able to help us to plan and organize the event. In the end, we will advertise the event to the very many current fellows in this field that are taking part in a handful of big COFUND projects here in Germany and very few of whom are already members of MCAA.

We also need to provide a list of chapter members for our end of year report (31.12.2015) and as the chapter gets bigger it will be very arduous to do that manually. Is there some way for chapter chairs to generate such data automatically? The headings are:

  • Name (First + Family)
  • Current Location (Organisation / City)
  • e-Mail
  • Member’s Profile

For instance, e-Mail addresses are only available from the portal through a workaround.

Thanks very much for your work on the MCAA portal.

All the Best,

Brian
