Mobility allowance taxed?
Hi, I'm just trying to figure out if the mobility allowance is subject to taxes during a MC individual fellowship? Many thanks, Susanne

Thanks Shashank!! I'm sorry for not being more specific, the question was about the Austrian situation. Would you know of any legal document where I would find that information? Just 'googeling' the topic didn't get me very far.
Well, finding a formal legal document stating this clearly is a tad bit difficult. If you just "need to know", then you can take my word as an MC Alumus who has worked in Austria.
If you need to argue it formally (say with your employer or tax advisor) then the legal framework for it is: https://findok.bmf.gv.at/findok?execution=e100000s1&segmentId=5ada1717-4197-4a7f-b285-e2966703bce3, point 35. They would know how to interpret the legalese. The same is stated in clearer terms as "Die mobility allowance ist als Aufwandsersatz zu betrachten und steuerfrei auszuzahlen." on page 13 of this booklet (https://www.tuwien.ac.at/fileadmin/t/tuwien/downloads/VR_Pers_Gender/Arbeitsrecht/Arbeitsrecht_CK_23062016.pdf) from TU Vienna as well as on page 37 of this document: https://www.ffg.at/sites/default/files/msca_fuer_unternehmen_2018_download.pdf from FFG.
I hope this helps. Keep us posted about the actual issue and its resolution.
Best, Shashank

Hello,
I can confirm that my mobility allowance is not taxed (JKU Linz).
Best,
Jan
Thank you guys, that is all very very helpful!!
The actual issue is that I'll start my fellowship at Med Uni Wien on October 1st and currently try to find out what my actual financial situation will be. Yesterday's conversation with my future supervisor about my contract and salary ended in a lot of confusion on both ends. I have done my PhD as part of an ITN in Norway and the situation there was that I got full 'Kollektivvertrag' salary plus the mobility allowance untaxed. When I asked if that would be the same in Austria I got the answer that nothing comes tax free in Austria. So I felt I had to get prepared for some discussions on that matter.
I'll keep you updated how the situtuation develops!
Thanks again, Susanne
Hi Susanne,
I can also confirm that my mobility allowance is not taxed and I work at Med Uni Wien.
Best,
Nico
Hello guys,
This question is also highly related to me. I am hosted by DTU in Denmark. And I still could not figure it out if mobility and family allowances are s subject to taxes or not. Do you have any knowledge about it? I am an individual MSCA fellow and my project started in this August.
All the best,
Arda Gülay
Hello,
I've recently completed my MSC-IF in the UK and my mobility allowance here was taxed in full (at 40%), but I know elsewhere it's not. I was wondering if anyone knows more about the situation in the UK in general and if it's possible to claim it back. I couldn't find anything conclusive on the topic online. Thanks!
Best,
Chiara
Hi Arda
I contacted a fellow researcher who was a part of my EU ITN project. She says that her Mobility Allowance WAS TAXED in Denmark. Can't say anything about the family allowance.
Hope this helps,
Shashank
Hi!
It depends very much on the tax laws of the Host nation. In Austria, for instance, the mobility allowance is exempt from taxation (as of tax year 2017).
Best, Shashank
