keeping a part-time teaching job while being a MCAA fellow?

Hello, I need your advice: can I keep a part-time teaching job (at a US uni), while being a MCAA fellow in Spain? I'm teaching an online course and would like to keep doing that for 2 reasons: (1) I do love teaching and don't want my teaching skills to get rusty, while I am working on my research project; (2) The subject I am teaching (anthropology) is closely linked to the topic of my research, by teaching this course I keep improving my level of expertise in this field, while the host institution cannot offer any training courses in anthropology. Thank you

Hi, I'm not sure what the regulations are in terms of the EU Grant agreement and whether this is allowed, it is probably best to check with the EU officer for your grant on the portal first of all to see if this is a possibility. In my university contract of work (Universiy of Cantabria) it explicitly states that I am not allowed to be employed by any other organisation throughout the duration of my contract, so you will also need to check the conditions within your contract of work with your host institution as well. It certainly soundes like a great oppounity if you are able to do both, but I know in my situation it wouldn't have been possible.

Hi, thank you so much! My university (UNav) is taking its time to answer me and we have only signed a pre-contract that does not say anything of this kind. Was hoping that somebody has had a similar experience...

Dear Sarali,

First of all, I wish you all the best for your new project. I do love teaching as well and I couldn't teach while I was in Lisbon as a Marie-Curie Fellow. However, I strongly recommend you to contact people that other fellows had recommended you.

A way that you can try is to keep teching either without receiving any kind of income or either not having a contract.

All the best,

Koldo

I recently spoke with my institution about a similar question and they indicated that my MSC-IF grant prohibited employment outside of the post doc fellowship.  Kind of ridiculous that you may not be able to keep teaching while in academia ... the irony created by bureaucracy ...

Perhaps you could still add an amendment to your MSC-IF that makes the teaching part of a collaboration within your project or something.  Or maybe you could loop it into the outreach portion of the MSC.  Not sure about getting money for it, but people in the U.S. can be creative with compensation stuff ;)

Thank you for your response, Jason! I do think too that teaching (given that you are not going to teach 5 courses per semester) is essential.

Dear Sarali, this will depend on your grant/fellowship agreement, you will need to check that and also confirm within your own institution. All the best, Sara
