Description

The role of the position at Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC) is to provide high-level expertise and training in electron microscopy to support research and teaching activities of the Centre. The position requires a close collaboration with the researchers in EMC in-charge of the electron microscopes. It also includes daily interactions with researchers and students using the facilities in EMC.

  • Responsibility for specific instruments in EMC
    • Responsible for the operation and performance of our transmission and scanning electron microscopes and some associated specimen preparation equipment. The responsibility for which microscope(s) and/or equipment will depend on the expertise of the appointee.
    • Oversee the service of the microscopes and equipment, in consultation with the EMC Director and Researchers in-charge of the electron microscopes.
  • Provide high-level training and supervision to the users of the EMC to ensure safe and effective operations of the microscopes and equipment.
  • Provide expertise, advice and assistance to the users to undertake qualified research using the electron microscopes and associated sample preparation equipment.
  • Provide administrative supports, for example
    • Administrate the booking system of the facilities.
    • Maintain training and safety records.
  • Participate and assist, if required, in the outreach activities of the Centre and the University.
  • The position may occasionally be required to undertake duties outside of regular working hours, to ensure that the equipment can be run by users outside the regular working hours.

Requirements

  • A postgraduate degree in science or engineering.
  • An understanding of electron microscope instrumentation and its maintenance.
  • High-level interpersonal communication skills and the ability to liaise with academic/research staffs, students and administrative/technical/general staffs.
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English.
  • Advanced understanding and skills in acquisition and interpretation of various types of EM data and its application to materials research.
  • High analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work, plan and perform duties without supervision.
  • Ability to take initiatives and make good judgements.
  • Service minded.

Desirable:

  • PhD degree in science or engineering with previous experience in advanced electron microscopy.
  • Experience in instrumental training.
  • High-level expertise on at least one advanced relevant specialist area, for example, HRTEM, STEM, EELS, Cs-corrected microscope, SEM, etc.
  • Experience in development of new techniques that extend the capabilities of electron microscopy/spectroscopy experiments.
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.
