Bratislava Declaration on Young Researchers

On

The last years have confronted young researchers in Europe with many significant challenges, for instance, non-transparent career trajectories, unreasonable work-life balance, the pressures created by hyper-competition, and limited research resources. The Slovak Presidency of the EU and the European Commission (DG Research) in an effort to prioritise the careers of young researchers invited a group of young researchers to draft a Declaration describing what issues are important for the careers of young researchers and how to adress these issues.

The main aspirations for improving researcher careers are:

1. To enable great people to realise their ideas to understand and improve the world.

2. To achieve sustainable and transparent career trajectories.

3. To achieve a diverse, collaborative, inter-disciplinary, open and ethical research environment.

4. To facilitate a healthy work-life balance.

The resulting document, the “Bratislava Declaration of Young Researchers”, outlines these aspirations as well as providing concrete proposals on how these aspirations should be achieved and implemented by funding agencies, the European Commission and member states. This Declaration was presented on the 19th of July at a meeting of the Ministers for Competitiveness (Research) in Bratislava, where it was officially presented by the Minister of Education Peter Plavčan and Commissioner Carlos Moedas. The Declaration will be annexed to the Council conclusions for adoption at the Competitiveness Council, Research section, which will take place in Brussels on the 29th of November 2016.

The declaration was authored by:

Shane Bergin / Sarah Glück / Miguel Jorge / Ciara Judge / Lynn Kamerlin / Clara Isabel Luján Martínez / Emília Petríková / Piotr Sankowski / Charikleia Tzanakou / Bruno González Zorn
