I just wanted to extend an offer to any researchers who find themselves moving to Brussels in the near future. I have been seconded here since late last year and if you have any questions about moving here, where to live/eat etc, please let me know. I'm always around for a chat, so don't be shy!

Depending on what you're looking for there are a few places. The obvious choice is IKEA, of which there are two on either side (east and west sides)

For expensive stuff, try http://www.momentum-deco.com/V6/Default.aspx which is near Sablon. A little bit cheaper, but still quite nice is http://www.depot-design.eu/nl/, near the city centre. Try also http://www.habitat.be, in the east of the city, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. They might be a little much, but you did say very nice!

For secondhand stuff, try either http://www.troc.com/be/ or http://www.expatriates.com/classifieds/bru/ , both of which have sections for furniture that may suit your needs also.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else or if these don't suit.
