Not enough ...We are a good...

Not enough ... We are a good team with several expertise connected to the climate change: extreme events, philosophy, agronomy, policy, forestry, anthropology, ecology, hydro/biology. The group is shaping very well, but this is not enough for applying to a COST call. The COST aims to create a network between countries (2 representatives from each country) and the initiators must come at least from 5 different EU countries. As I see we are mostly Italian, counting the represented countries we are exactly 6 (Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Czech) but this is not enough. COST is really competitive and even for a perfect and promising proposal the small number of interested countries could be considered as a weakness by the evaluators. If we wanna try for a COST there are 2 main points to be addressed: - increasing the number of participating countries - finding common goals for all the fields ... remind that COST funds networking and training and not the research activity! So for being funded we must find common reasons for creating a network (and the common reason can´t be "just" meeting for writing a proposal) In case we are looking for something different (i.e. MC ITN or cooperation), then it is "easier" since we are talking about research and the climate change id obviously the connection. Hi guys,
I agree with you, we are mostly Italian, and it is necessary to involve other countries (btw, I work in a SME in Germany). In my opinion, to involve other persons it is necessary to have a common aim, at least in a general way (ITN, Cost, etc.).
A couple of years ago I was involved in another project about the climate change in Argentina, analysed under an engineering/physical point of view. Maybe I can try to contact my past colleagues, but, again, I have to propose something, not just a list of persons…. We need to discuss some ideas and find common goals.

well having SME is already an added value for COST and H2020 in general, so 2 good news at the same time: a new country (Germany) and a SME :-)

Hi Riccardo,

nbot that I am particularly attached to COST actions. But from the spreadsheet created by Nadia, we have now 19 interested participants to the CC WG. Are you sure we are not enough?

Luigi,

the COST action is something related to national activity, each country has right to 2 representatives from different institutes (never mind if there are 100 people interested, they count like 1 country). The minimum number of countries required for creating a COST action is 5. I do not know the affiliations of the 19 researchers on the sheet, but they seems coming form the 6 countries that I already mentioned. The network must be larger for having some chance, 8-9 countries could already be enough. Can you please write on the sheet also the affiliation country for having an idea? The second issue is finding the common goal for networking, but this could arise from the discussion.

If we get a reasonable number of countries and some networking idea we can try to submit the proposal for this call and in case it does not go ahead (very likely) we can take advantage from the evaluation for improving the proposal for the next call.

Well, I was still not able to complete.

I am an architect, in Romania, at the landscape architecture department.

CLIMATE CHANGE IN EUROPE: past and future life along rivers

  • changes in precipitation and extreme events (floods, droughts): atmospheric sciences, engineering
  • how Authorities and citizens have to deal with these issues: social sciences, economy
  • past climate changes and human adaptation: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, agronomy
  • changes in riverine environment (plants, fish, etc.): biology, ecology, chemistry
  • hydraulic and morphodynamic evolution of large EU rivers: engineering, physics

Just to give you a starting point of our discussion: these are some general problems, and the relative competences involved (the list if not complete).

Of course, these are my ideas, very general and not detailed. A lot of work was done about climate change, but this topic remains a big challenge for the future, and we need some good ideas to fill the gap and a strong network to attract funds.

As Riccardo said, we have only 1 month to write a proposal for the incoming COST action, but submit something in March can be helpful for improving our future work.

Dealing with water and climate change is good for me - it is tightly related with my future postdoc in Italy (on secondment from Romania, so I still belong to a Romanian institution).

thanks!

Dear colleagues,

If we want to write something for March it would be better to start organizing and dividing the tasks. We are almost 20 researchers from very different fields and I think that we can do a great job. Unfortunately I think that is difficult to start something like this without meeting. Maybe we can use internet platforms to start the discussion among us and start writing the proposal. What do you think? Some ideas for the network platform to use?

Dear all,

I am afraid I won´t be able to join the current initiative for the COST action. Although I am interested in joining to something like that, at this time I have too much in my plate to comit for something like proposal writing.

Best luck!

Dear Salvator, Dear Juan,

I agree that March is way too tight for a cost action. And I believe that Riccardo is with me on this. If you are truly interested in doing something, at a later, but not indefinitely later, date, then I would encourage to express your preference on the doodle about our meeting in Rome (http://doodle.com/8y45pubt28f5ey76) and try to be with us. So far second half of march and second half of april seems to be the most popular options.

Dear All,

Impossible for me to join you at Rome, but I am still interested in participating. I hope we can find the way.

Dear all,

I'm physicist theoretician in applied science. I worked for laser texturing of photovoltaics to replace chemical treatments during my PhD. Now I'm at Hilase CZ and will be Marie Curie Fellow from September on laser processing of solids for functionalization of surfaces in nanotechnologies. As I have been making modeling in quantum plasma using fluid dynamics for several years, now, (PhD included) maybe I could give support in a COST action based on climate change. Self-consistent and complex systems are my daily work with modeling. So maybe I could help.

However, this March 2015 is already quite busy, as we are writing a FET-Open project in my lab. What could be the next deadline ?

Here is my CV if interesting for your action;

Best wishes,

Dear all,

we are about 20 people interested in participating to a future bid on climate change. Considering the variety of filed represented, the countries potentially involved, I believe it is worth having a meeting to decide which specific action we target. Riccardo may be right that we are still too few (in terms of countries represented) for a COST action. Still, something more modest can work easily.

Based on the results of our first doodle, the timespan convinient for most of us is the second part of March. So I propose that we hold the kickoff meeting of the Climate change WG in that period. For thos unable to attend, there will be the possibility to join us on google hangouts.

Here is the new doodle on the specific day. P.ease fill it in asap as time is quite short: http://doodle.com/3knhv9frp65m8qx3

Let me remind you that the meeting will be held the same day of the joint meeting of the North Italian and Sicilian chapter. So many of us can kill two bords with one stone, as they say.

All the best,

Luigi

Dear Luigi,
I am unable to attend at the Climate Change WG meeting in Italy, but I would join it on Google hangout.
