Science to Business, Business to Science... What are the MSC fellows concerns around this interaction?

1 min read Feb 10, 2016

Hi MSC fellows

The General Assembly in Venice will hold a workshop entitled "Building Science-Business Partnerships" organised by the MCAA WG Bridging Science and Business. We come here to invite all of you to contribute to this workshop by naming your three major concerns related to Academy and Business interactions.

We will lead the workshop in order to give answers to the most common concerns! Contribute!

The "Building Science-Business Partnerships" workshop aims to be an executive "think tank" about Science-Business interactions, featuring a panel of experts leading a discussion focused on specific topics of relevance for the MCAA community. The session overarching topics are:

1. pinpoint challenges found in Science-Business partnerships and how to cope with them (we are also gathering info with the Alumni, to know what are the main concerns closer to them)
2. how to launch business from research, eg, fund own ideas
3. science-business career transitions or interconnections

Looking forward in hearing from you.

Kind regards
Claudia

Dear Claudia,

Thanks for this initiative,

My three issues are:

  • Academia to Industry Career Transitions - MCAA can provide a lot of information on this based on alumni member experience
  • Managing Industry-Academia Partnerships, in particular, how to deal with intellectual property issues between participants
  • How to adapt the Business Plan of a Start-up to Business Reality

Warm regards,

Brian

Hi Claudia,

to Brian's issue I would the following questions:

  • Which roles are available for scientist in business besides research and development?
  • Which skills and mindset are needed to move to Business reality?
  • What is the added value (if any) of being a scientist when working in business? Which type of businesses are interested in hiring scientists?
  • Why are scientist often afraid of transitioning to business right after PhD? Should PhD programmes be updated to the new societal needs?

thanks

marco
