Attendance on the 25th of March is open to the public

The 2017 MCAA Conference and General Assembly will be held on Thursday 23nd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March 2017 in Salamanca, Spain. The host for this event is the University of Salamanca, in cooperation with the MCAA Spain/Portugal Chapter.

We are designing a program that covers the main areas of interests of our members in terms of career, networking and societal challenges. Participants will be encouraged to be active contributors in poster presentations, short pitches and plenary talks. The event will include a poster session; we also hope to organise a ‘science lab’ event at which delegates can step up to the challenge of presenting their project in three minutes maximum.

Draft program

The meetings will take place in the Salamanca University’s Hospedería Fonseca (2 Calle Fonseca). This Fonseca complex is an integrated facility that comprises two buildings: Hospedería Fonseca (where the meetings and poster exhibitions will take place) and Colegio Fonseca (with the catering facilities for coffee breaks and lunches). The two buildings are close together (within one minute walking distance). Without doubt, Salamanca is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain; it boasts both a rich cultural heritage and extensive experience in hosting international conferences. The University was founded in 1218 and much of the original architecture remains. In 2002, Salamanca held the position of European City of Culture and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some useful links include:

There are numerous hotels, hostels and rental appartments in Salamanca, but none of them are particularly large, and it has proved difficult or impossible to negotiate advantageous rates for block bookings. We therefore invite individual members to make their own arrangements with the hotel (or other accommodation) of their own choosing. A non-exhaustive list of possible accommodation is provided here.

Salamanca is situated about 200km to the north-west of Madrid. It has its own airport to the east of the city, but this is only small and offers few international connections. One alternative option is to use Barajas airport in Madrid, and then take the train or coach (there is a direct line which leaves from Terminal 1 at Barajas) for transferring to Salamanca. There are good rail links to other Spanish cities, including nearby Valladolid, and to some Portuguese cities.
