What will we learn about?

Filing taxes as a visiting scholar in the United States requires the effort of understanding the basic, albeit complex, differences between filing the federal and state tax return. This task may be less grueling than expected if a systematic approach is taken. We will cover how to determine fiscal residency according to the amount of time spent in the USA during the fiscal year 2019, and how to identify the need to file a federal return and/or state return. What:

Tax Day in the USA is traditionally April 15, but in 2020 this deadline has been postponed to July 15 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Our speaker:

Federico Aletti (pictured with his favorite pet) received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering (2009) from Politecnico di Milano, his alma mater in his hometown in Italy. He is a Marie Curie Alumnus and currently lives in San Diego, California where is an Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California San Diego.

He has done research in multiple countries during his doctoral and post-doctoral training: other than in Italy, he was previously a Visiting Scholar both at Michigan State University and at the University of California San Diego in the USA, and a Visiting Professor in Brazil with the Universidade Nove de Julho in Sao Paulo, and with the Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos.

Federico’ research focus on cardiovascular physiology, disease and bioengineering, more precisely in the field of critical care, with a specific interest in novel models and technologies to design new therapies for acutely ill patients. Right now, he is also trying to help in the fight against COVID-19 by exploring the common features between bacterial and viral sepsis of little understood but potentially fatal complications.
