Candidate for the Cyprus Chapter Chair position: Maria Hadjiathanasiou

My MSCA fellowship was one of the most rewarding periods of my life, unfolding during the uniquely challenging years of the pandemic. Between 2019 and 2021, my MSCA Widening project was a true lifeline: it enabled me to pursue my research ambitions despite uncertainty, isolation, and lockdowns, and it reinforced my belief in the value of European research and solidarity.

During my fellowship, I explored the power and effectiveness of cultural diplomacy through my project “Power through Attraction: British, Greek and Turkish Cultural Diplomacy in Cyprus, 1945–1974.” By examining how culture, education, and international outreach shaped perceptions and influence, the research deepened my conviction that cultural exchange remains one of Europe’s most meaningful tools for dialogue, cooperation, and resilience.

Being part of the MSCA community has given me a strong sense of belonging. It has encouraged me to keep striving for my professional goals, strengthened my resilience through periods of uncertainty, and opened doors through mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities that shaped the early stages of my career. To this day, the MSCA network remains a source of fulfilment and inspiration.

I would be honoured to serve as Chair (or Vice-Chair) of the MCAA Cyprus Chapter and represent our members on the Board. I am committed to strengthening our community through active engagement, mentoring, and outreach, fostering synergies and co-creation across Cyprus and beyond, and expanding our presence within the wider Marie Curie Alumni Association network.
