Debate: EUROPE AND THE MIDDLE EAST ARE CONDEMNED TO FIGHT

I would like to invite you to assist the following debate in Barcelona the 18th of February from 6 to 8 pm at the Barcelona Centre for International Affair (CIDOB). This event is open to everyone, independently of the course of study, and it is free of charge
Debate: EUROPE AND THE MIDDLE EAST ARE CONDEMNED TO FIGHT
The debate will feature Rafael Vilasanjuan and Francis Ghilès. Vilasanjuan will argue in favor of the motion, and Ghilès will argue against it. Cale Salih will moderate the debate.
Rafael Vilasanjuan is Director of Policy and Global Development of ISGlobal since March 2011. He was Deputy Director of the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) from 2006 to 2011. He also worked for over 12 years with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), starting as Communication Director in 1995 and later as General Director of the Spanish section of MSF. In 1999, when the organization was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace, he was appointed General Secretary of MSF International until 2006. During this period he worked in conflict areas such as Afghanistan, Chechnya, Somalia, Sudan, West Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia and Iraq.
Francis Ghilès is a political scientist who through eighteen years with The Financial Times reporting on international capital markets and North Africa has built up extensive experience and high level contacts throughout the Western Mediterranean, the UK, the USA and Japan. He is now based at CIDOB where he analyses emerging security, political, economic and energy trends in the region and connects them to European, US and North African policy priorities.
Cale Salih is a Project Manager at the Institute for Integrated Transitions, as well as a Masters of Studies Candidate in International Human Rights Law at Oxford University. She previously worked as a Middle East analyst at various organizations, including: the European Council on Foreign Relations (Kurds in Syria, Turkey and Iraq focus), the International Crisis Group (Syria and Lebanon focus); Integrity Research & Consultancy (Syria focus); and Al-Monitor.
Registration: The event is free of charge, but you need to register at the link below in advance in order to be admitted. The deadline for registration is the 10th of February.
DEBATE FORMAT (Adapted from classic Oxford style debating)
Collect and count audience’s paper ballots voting on the debate motion.
Moderator introduces the speakers and debate topic (3-5 minutes)
ROUND ONE: Opening statements (12 minutes) ROUND TWO: Debaters address each other directly (15 minutes)
ROUND THREE: Questions from the audience (15 minutes)
ROUND FOUR: Closing statements (10 minutes)
Collect and count audiences’ paper ballots voting on the debate motion. The debater who moved the numbers the most, in percentage point terms, and will be declared the winner.
