Italy- US GF: in need of some financial info by previous or current fellows!
Hello all!
It is so good to find you here at the Italy Chapter!
My GF is about to start and I still cannot figure out the basics... So here I am!
My first question is about the approximate net salary in Italy (Venice) and the US (Boston) for global fellows who are also entitled to the family allowance i.e. the salary after tax, social security, health insurance and whatever other reductions. I am particularly asking because I will be bringing my baby with me and I am super stressed as I need to plan very early on for daycare etc, which particularly in the US is incredibly expensive (good luck to me!)
My second question is about health insurance and how it works in both Italy and the US for global fellows also vis-a-vis their descendants. In other words, will I receive health insurance as part of my contract or I should cover this myself? Also, will my baby be covered by this insurance as well or do I need to pay extra?
Thank you so much and I am looking forward to your responses!
Anna

Thank you so much! I hadn't noticed that piece of info. I wonder whether this sum also includes the family allowance or not... I guess some more digging is needed.
Well, I don't know about Italy. All depends on what deductions employers have to make for social security, old age pension and others. However, my experience of my first few months as a GF is that it is in the forth month only that I got to know the correct amount of my net salary. All sorts of confusions were there, I could not get correct information from my employer, about the net amount in the outgoing phase, the payment modalites for the mobility and family allowances - they may, or may not, be included in the salary, that depends on the employer, and if they are, then deductions might be made on them also.

Hi Anna,
Congratulations!
The average salary of an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow in Italy is around 4,000 euros per month and is tax-free.
