Nit Europea de la Recerca 2019/ European Researchers’ Night 2019
Hi there!
The science communication event of the year is coming!
Date: 27th of September
Time: 18h – 23h
Place: FabCafe Barcelona (Carrer de Bailèn, 11, 08010 Barcelona)
Тhe European Researchers' Night is a mega event which takes place every year on the last Friday of September simultaneously in about 300 cities all over Europe with the aim of bringing science, research and technology closer to the public. Participants have the chance to discover what researchers really do and why it matters for their daily life. They can even learn what researchers do besides their science!
Under the motto “Who is Who in European Science” several research centers (incl. Centre for Genomic Regulation - CRG, Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia - ICIQ, Institute of Marine Sciences - ICM- CSIC) and the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) invite to the FabCafe for an entertaining evening with the following activities:
18:00h-19:00h: Podium Discussion and exhibition “Bridging STEM to STEAM: Why art can be more than a communication tool in science and technology”
Art and science- they seem like polar opposites, one driven by data and the head, the other by emotion and the heart. One often associated with technical introverts, the other with expressive eccentrics. Although processes may initially look very different, both fields follow a similar route: Artists and scientists tend to approach problems with a similar open-mindedness and inquisitiveness — both imagine, interrogates, challenge current standards without fearing the unknown. However, in many cases arts and design are treated as a communication tool for scientific results.
In this panel discussion, the two artists Carolin Vogler (fashion designer) and Reiko Yamada (composer/ sound artists), who are currently collaborating with two research centres in Barcelona, will discuss with two scientists, their experiences in interdisciplinary projects and how art can contribute more to science by collaborations from the offset in the navigation of the scientific unknown, resulting in unexpected outcomes.
19:30h – 21:00h: Research Project Exhibition
PhD students of the following seven European Training Networks will showcase their projects and explain how their research impacts people’s daily life.
CHROMDESIGN - Chromatin architecture and Design https://www.chromdesign.eu/
MIXITIN – Bringing the paradigm for marine pelagic production into the 21st century: incorporating mixotrophy into mainstream marine research
http://www.mixotroph.org/
NOAH - Network of Functional Molecular Containers with Controlled Switchable Abilities https://www.noah-itn.eu/
OPATHY - From Omics to Patient: Improving Diagnostics of Pathogenic Yeasts http://www.opathy.eu/
SINGEK - Promoting SINgle cell GEnomics to explore the ecology and evolution of hidden microeukaryotes
http://www.singek.eu/
VIROFLOW - Enabling Technologies and Drug Discovery: Continuous Flow Processes to Discover Novel Antiviral Inhibitors

ELCOREL - Electrochemical Conversion of Renewable Electricity into Fuels and Chemicals http://www.elcorel.org/
20:00h – 21:00h: Speed dating with scientists
In a typical speed-dating format, participants have the chance to talk to scientists from various disciplines and research centers and ask them in 2min all that they always wanted to know.
If you are interested to participate as a scientist, please register here until the 15th of September:

As a participant of the Researchers’ Night there is no need for prior registration
21:15 - 22:30h: BCN Science Slam
A science slam is a competition, during which young scientists present their own research in max. 10 minutes in a comprehensible, vivid and engaging way. The goal is to win the audience’s mind and hearts as only the audience is the jury and decides, who will win.
Criteria for a good science slam are therefore not only the scientific content but also comprehensibility and humor. The BCN Science Slam was established in March 2017 by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), which has since then run two editions per year together with different collaborators like the Barcelona Institute for Science and Technology (BIST) and the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA).
How can you participate?
Are you a PhD student or postdoc? Then sign up here to become one of the six science slammers by sending us a one-minute video of you describing your research project:

The event will be in English!
Don’t miss the deadline: 16th of September 2019!
A review panel will select 6 candidates that will be informed until the 18th of September to present their work at the Barcelona Science Slam. There will be prizes for the best voted slams!
See you on the 27th!
