Opening a bank account in Spain for non-EU citizen

1 min read Mar 17, 2020

Dear all,

I am writting on behalf of a ESR from Iran recruited on a MSCA ITN project in Spain. Since January, his has not been able to open a bank account. All requests were rejected as he is a non-EU citizen and does not have the NIE card yet (in process). Did someone face this kind of problem? Any solution?

Thank you very much and best regards,

Pauline

Hello Pauline,

He should be able to open an account in any bank providing the following documents: NIE number and the certificate that he applied for the card (no need for physical NIE card), passport (visa) and ITN contract. The is a general procedure. I am also a non-EU citizen and I have opened an account in Santander bank without any problem.

In any case, he should get assistance from his host institution in this matter.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Nevena

Hi Nevena,

Thank you very much for your reply. However for now all banks have rejected his application as he does not have the physical NIE card (TIE). Even visa + NIE number + certificate + empadronamiento are not enough... We are keep trying.

Have a nice day!

Hi there,

Perhaps you have already tried this, but, in case whether you possess a domicilio fiscal in other bank (foreign included), there is a possibility to open an online bank account. For that you do not even need nomina and it should be accessible with any DNI. The option online will be confortable also regarding the times we all live at present.

Here is a resume of some current options in Spain: https://www.kelisto.es/cuentas-bancarias/mejor-compra/las-mejores-cuentas-corrientes-sin-nomina-2756

Let me know if you need some more details.

Have a nice day!
