OpenAIRE - open access policies, open science and more ...

by michael rogers

The OpenAIRE platform fosters dialogue on open access policies, facilitates adoption of and innovation in open science, and works with initiatives worldwide to connect Europe to the global open research environment. It includes a network of 34 national open access desks (NOADs) which help researchers make their work open access and a European helpdesk which coordinates moves towards open science.

The EU-funded OpenAIRE-Advance project aims to maintain and consolidate the OpenAIRE services, as well as making them compatible with the European Open Science Cloud. The EOSC is a pan-European federation of infrastructures which allows scientists to store and access research data easily.

The project will strengthen Europe's global position in research data management and ensure that the EU reaps the benefits of data-driven science.

Furthermore, OpenAIRE-Advance will boost the outreach capacity of the NOADs to foster national-level discussions on open science, and setting up expert task forces for knowledge exchange on open access policies, research data management and legal issues.

Open science pilots with three major research institutions, citizen science initiatives and innovators, and extended collaborations with partners in Africa, Canada, Japan, Latin America and the USA will further boost outreach.

The project promotes alignment of open science infrastructure by adopting common standards and services, transparency regarding the costs of moving to an open access publishing model, and scholarly communication. In addition, the European helpdesk’s training role will be strengthened by producing materials to enable research bodies to support open science more effectively.

On a technical level, OpenAIRE-Advance aims to better understand how to combine and enhance OpenAIRE services to comply with stakeholders’ needs. The project will optimise performance and refine functionalities based on user feedback, as well as compiling a product catalogue to enhance uptake.
