“Science Diplomacy”

Special Issue of the MCAA Newsletter (ISSN 2663-9483)

To be published in June2022

Deadline for submission of pitches (150 words): 8 March 2022

The world keeps facing grand challenges which cannot be addressed by countries in isolation. Science diplomacy has always played a key role in shaping the future. For example, during the Cold War, science diplomacy was instrumental for advancing space science as well as preserving science and peace on the Antarctic continent, through the signing of the Antarctic Treaty. In the modern world we are facing different but extremely complex challenges that need immediate action and collaboration between countries. From climate change to the COVID-19 pandemic, science diplomacy can help to address global challenges, promote understanding, and increase social prosperity.

The June 2022 Special Issue (SI) of the MCAA Newsletter will focus on the role of science diplomacy in today’s interconnected world. The SI will look at how science diplomacy could help address global challenges by providing alternative perspectives and approaches.

In a nutshell, the Newsletter SI on science diplomacy represents another stepping stone in the MCAA’s mission to provide tools for researchers to practice science diplomacy locally, enhance scientific collaboration, reduce tensions in conflicting regions, advance science, and address societal challenges.

It is often the case that SD happens behind the scenes. In order to give visibility and recognition to the important role of these practices in today’s society, we are launching an Open Call for articles addressed to all interested MCAA members. If you think that you can share an article, an interview, or a clear vision on the way science diplomacy has changed or influenced your field, role or career, then we encourage you to do so in this SI.

In particular we are looking for articles, interviews and contributions which will show the practices of:

- Science for diplomacy: The use of science to advance diplomatic objectives;

- Diplomacy for science: The use of diplomatic action to further scientific and technological progress;

- Science in diplomacy: The direct involvement of science or scientific actors in diplomatic processes.

We welcome suggestions from researchers engaged in any field of science.

The submission process consists of two stages:
