Part-time individual fellowship (IF)
Dear colleagues of the France chapter,
I am an incoming Marie Curie Individual Fellowship holder, to be based in Paris. I read somewhere in the European Commission's documents that once the project starts, an individual fellow could request to carry out the project on a part-time basis for family/professional reasons. If you have done/are currently doing your IF part-time, would you mind sharing your experience? Notably, how did you negotiate a part-time contract, how is the salary calculated, and how did your host institute calculate the extension of your contract beyond the 24 months for a full-time employment?
Many thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Zi

Hi Daniel, Thanks so much for your reply! Sure I will enquire about the part-time option and see if the procedures are different and indeed easier!

Hi Zi, part-time is possible, for up to 50% of the project duration, for "professional, personal or family reasons and subject to prior approval by your host organisation and the Research Executive Agency" (https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/sites/mariecurie2/files/msca-if-fellows-note_en.pdf).
I didn't do this myself, but I did arrange a suspension of my project for professional reasons (global fellowship, European host in France). The EC (represented by my project officer) simply required a request to be submitted by the host (via the Participant Portal). The difficult part was getting my host (the CNRS) to implement this in the context of French labour law, as temporary contracts cannot be suspended; I had to resign (under protest), then sign a new contract at the end of the suspension. So a solution was found, but I had to insist on my right to suspend, with reference to the Grant Agreement.
Perhaps you will find that it is simpler to change a temporary contract from full-time to part-time. I hope so, please let us know.
Best wishes, Daniel
