“XIV Baltic Science Festival - X Sopot Day of Science”

The MCAA – Polish Chapter was represented at the Sopot Day of Science under the Baltic Science Festival. The Baltic Festival is a collaborative outreach activity undertaken by most academic institutions in the Tricity area of Poland. The festival took place from 24th to 28th May 2017. The different universities and research institutes participated in the event by organizing several activities open to the public. The activities range from open days, visits to laboratories, poster presentations, seminars, lectures, exhibitions as well as science picnics. The Baltic Science Festival was in its 14th year. The Sopot Day of Science was organized by the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN). The picnic was in its 10th year. The event was organized on 27th May 2017 in the Plac Przyjaciół Sopotu, which is the main square in the seaside resort town of Sopot.

The event had several stands from the different departments of the IOPAN, and 3 stands from the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IMP PAN). One of the stands of IMP PAN was organized through the support of the MCAA-Polish Chapter. The stand was designed to inform the public about the opportunities in research and to attract the kids to careers in research. The stand had posters highlighting the different Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) and how one can participate in them. The posters about the MSCA were prepared by the National Contact Point in Poland. In addition, a poster displaying the mobility aspect and covering several MCAA alumni was displayed to highlight the positives of cultural integration and cross-border mobility. As a part of increasing the awareness of the MCAA and MCAA Polish Chapter, leaflets, magazines, pins, pens and t-shirts were offered to the visitors of the stands. In addition, kids were encouraged to have a dialogue with the MCAA representatives. Some kids even responded by asking questions or exchanging greetings in foreign languages including English, Spanish and French.

The picnic was attended by more than 150 people of all ages from toddlers to senior citizens. Thus, it can be said that the outreach initiative was a success. The MCAA was represented by Maciej Telesiński of IOPAN and Javier Martinez Suarez and Rohan Soman of IMP PAN. Maria Górna of the University of Warsaw, the chairperson of the Polish Chapter, and Clara Llorens Quintana of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology contributed by preparing the posters.
