We'll explore the world beyond the lab together - because publishing and patenting your research is just the beginning.

This event is designed to open doors to the entrepreneurial opportunities that most researchers never knew were within their reach, connecting you with the people, programmes, and mindset to take your research towards the commercial route.

During the day, we'll hear from experts in EU and regional funding, innovation support, and tech commercialization, followed by real success stories from former researchers who took the leap and built their own ventures. We'll wrap up with hands-on networking over coffee and an informal networking event where participants will have the chance to talk to those entrepreneurs one to one, the perfect setting to connect beyond the formalities.

The event is organised by the MCAA BSB Working Group, Communication WG, and Spain-Portugal Chapter, in collaboration with ACCIO, CRG, RMIT Europe, and Barcelona Activa.

The European Union's proposed "Fifth Freedom" that is the free circulation of knowledge, researchers, and innovation, represents a landmark ambition to complete the Single Market by addressing the longstanding fragmentation that continues to constrain European science. Building on the ongoing reforms to the European Research Area (ERA), this initiative seeks to dismantle persistent barriers to cross-border mobility, harmonise career conditions, and create a more coherent and competitive research landscape across Member States.

In this webinar, Thomas Sturm (Professor ICREA & Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Member of Academia Europaea) explores the historical and policy foundations of the Fifth Freedom, unpacking its scientific and democratic rationale and what it means in practice for the research community.
