Job description:

The Communication Manager will be responsible for overseeing and implementing the overall communication strategy of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA). The role involves developing, managing, and optimizing MCAA’s communication activities across various channels, ensuring a cohesive and effective outreach to members and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the MCAA Communication Team and supporting the MCAA Secretariat and Board
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with MCAA’s goals and mission.
  • Overseeing MCAA’s communication channels - including the MCAA Newsletter, the IRRADIUM Magazine, the MCAA Blog, MCAA’s website content and social media platforms (X, LinkedIn, and YouTube) and other platforms and channels that might be adopted in the future.
  • Ensuring brand consistency in style, quality, and tone of voice across all communication channels.
  • Supervising content creation, including drafting, editing, and proofreading materials such as press releases, reports, and internal documents.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with the Social Media Officer(s), Communication Officer(s), and Graphic Designer(s) to ensure high-quality and engaging content.
  • Developing and executing communication campaigns for major MCAA events, including the Annual Conference and relevant external conferences.
  • Overseeing media relations and fostering partnerships with key stakeholders to enhance MCAA’s visibility and outreach.
  • Analyzing communication performance metrics and providing regular reports on engagement, reach, and impact.
  • Managing and updating MCAA’s communication and dissemination plans, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Providing strategic guidance and training to MCAA members on effective communication practices.
  • To undertake all other ad hoc duties that can be reasonably expected of this post.

The Communication Manager will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the Communication Officer(s) and Assistant(s), and other team members, including volunteers from the Communication working group and the Editorial Board, as well as consult with the MCAA Board, to ensure an effective and cohesive communication strategy.

What we expect:

  • A graduate qualification or proven experience in communication, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in communication management, preferably in an international or research-related setting.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills in English, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and motivate a team.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools, including social media management platforms, content management systems, and email marketing tools.
  • Experience with brand management and storytelling techniques.
  • Proficient user of Google Suite, Microsoft Office and Monday.com.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools for tracking communication performance (Google Analytics, social media insights, etc.).
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an international virtual team.
  • C1 level in English is required; C2 level is an advantage.
  • Available to work during Western European working hours.
  • Willingness to join a few meetings outside of European time zones or during weekends when needed.
  • Willingness to travel, generally within the EU, for MCAA Annual Conferences (once a year) and other relevant meetings (approximately three times a year).

Will be considered as advantages:

  • Understanding the workflow of the MCAA or a similar volunteer-based international nonprofit association located in Belgium.
  • Experiences working in international nonprofit associations and Horizon Europe Coordinated Support Actions (CSA).
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Experience in managing communication strategies for large conferences.
  • Strategic communication planning.
  • Background in science communication or working within research-related organizations.
  • Residence in Belgium or willingness to relocate if necessary.
  • Proven experience with MCAA’s communication channels and working groups.

What we offer:

  • A freelance service contract until 30 September 2025 (trial period) with a strong possibility of long-term renewal till September 2027.
  • Compensation is based on the candidate’s experience, with a daily (8 working hours) gross rate of 200 Euros. A correction coefficient may apply depending on the geopolitical location.
  • The position is expected to be full-time, approximately 19 days/month, resulting in a commitment of roughly 40 hours a week, and should not exceed 215 days/calendar year.
