MCAA launches super book series to bring science to children
The Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) is thrilled to announce the launch of the all-new My Super Science Heroes project – an exciting and enriching collection for young learners. It features researchers who have made fantastic contributions to society by using very human superpowers to solve problems and make important discoveries.
Of course, the first book in the series is about Marie Curie! She’s our super science hero who was awarded two Nobel Prizes for her work in physics and chemistry.
Titled Marie Curie and the Power of Persistence, the book is geared for children ages 6 to 9. Written and illustrated as a dynamic superhero story, it’s a picture book that depicts science as it really is – an epic adventure complete with superheroes and villains.
In this case, Super Evil Nemesis is furiously researching ways to stop the spread of knowledge. One of his many minions, Mr. Opposition has been sent to defeat Marie Curie. But our super scientist fights back with incredible drive and her power of persistence.
One thing’s for sure, while most superhero stories feature heroes with fictional supernatural powers – traits that no child can ever relate to, this book does something amazing. It shows how curiosity, persistence, critical thinking and creativity can transform into a real superpower that can one day save the world!
No doubt, superheroes like Marie Curie instil a positive message about following one’s curiosity and never giving up on failure. Young learners are also encouraged to be critical about ignorance and superficiality.
True to this principle, this entire project is a demonstration of what can be achieved when innovative minds come together. Behind the project are MCAA’s own team of heroes: Karla Valenti (writer), Micaela Crespo Quesada and Marco Masia (scientific advisors) and Annalisa Baghelli (illustrator).
The book is available here: https://mysuperscienceheroes.com/. Also check out the online shop for the full collection of My Super Science Heroes. It includes notebooks, sweatshirts, mugs, water bottles, games and puzzles – for parents and children! The proceedings from sales will be used to fund the activities of the MCAA.
