Extension of Researcher's contract form remaining RTN funds (MSCA IF)

1 min read Jun 15, 2023

Dear MSCA Alumni,

Have anyone of you had their employment contract at their host institution extended beyond the end date of the project from remaining funds in the Research, Training and Network budget? I was discussing this with my Department and have always assumed that this would be possible. Now I was very surprised to hear from my Department Manager that my contract cannot be extended beyond the end date of the project. Please share your experiences or direct me to any useful sources of information.

All best wishes

Dear Akkad Alhussein,

The contract cannot be extended beyond the end point of the project.

We had remaining budget for our project and we could extend the fellows' contract until the end of the project, but not beyond that point I am afraid. So... same experience here, sorry.

Best wishes,

Marina

I thought that any money in the research account went to the school when the project ends. If that is right, it would mean your school could rehire you with it at their discretion, but it would not be an extension of your MSCA as such. I could be wrong. The main question is where does unused money in the research budget go at the project's end.

Dear Akkad Alhussein,

I am under the impression that this is an ambivalent question - I have heard about extension having actually taken place for someone, while the rule you are mentioning, that the project duration is fixed, also exists. If your department says no, maybe you can ask your project officer? I suppose this actually depends for each case, and also from administrative depatment to administrative department. But it is only an impression...

All the best,

Barbara
