Fwd: Campaign for an increase in EU Horizon research budget

On

Dear Chairs of MCAA Chapter and Working Group,

Hope you are doing well.

As you probably know that MCAA is vocal against the proposed budget cut in Research & Innovation in the Horizon Europe framework program. We recently joined a press conference together with our partner organization, you can find the details here: https://www.mariecuriealumni.eu/news/press-conference-impact-covid-19-and-budget-cuts-next-generation-eu-researchers

Several of our members are also collecting testimonials from the researchers about this issue. Please kindly check the email below from Natalie and it would be great if some of you could provide the testimonials. Please feel free to directly get in touch with Natalie or Antonia

Thank you very much and I wish you a nice day.

Best Regards,

Mostafa

Dear All,

You might have heard that Antonia and me are in contact with MEPs who are pushing for an increase in the EU Horizon research budget.

These MEPs have asked us if we could present testimonials from researchers who would want to or have establish(ed) their research group in Europe but are concerned about their future due to lack of EU/Horizon funding and hence considering moving to the US or elsewhere. Or who write that they were only able to do their research that brought them to where they are today through their ERC funding and that it would would not be possible anymore for future generations to achieve something like that with the new budget. These testimonials are really important for MEPs to make a compelling case that reducing the research budget to unreasonable levels could possibly drive some of the best researchers away from Europe.

We have managed to get 11 testimonials so far, but we are still far from our goal of 50. Would it be possible to ask each of you to consider writing a statement yourself (if you feel that applies to you) and to reach out to PIs that you know? If each of us could help with getting 4-5 testimonials, we could achieve our goal.

The structure of testimonials should be - 1 sentence who you are, what you are doing (for non-scientists), why your research is important and then why you are concerned about the current funding cuts, and possibly that you will have to consider leaving the EU if that does not change. If possible on letterhead, signed and pdf format. Testimonials scan be sent to Antonia or me, and are needed by October 24th.

Please help us, this is a really important initiative. The EU research budget is being decided for the next 7 years (2021-2027) and will affect all of us in one way or another.

Thank you very much for your help and support!

Nathalie
