No plan to tackle climate change and/or scientific challenges ahead of us
I find that the white paper makes a good job at presenting some of the challenges ahead of us. As it's impossible to predict the future, they rely on scenarios as this is often done (see for instance here https://www.dni.gov/index.php/global-trends-home). The decline of European influence, and as a consequence of European values, is well illustrated through a few key numbers (demography for instance). My main concern is that I see very few mentions of two potentially major disruptors in our near future, climate change and technological disruption. How do these disruptors play out in the five scenarios? I think that this needs to be addressed beyond a simplistic "more Europe is good, less Europe is bad". Second, Europe is still a science and technology powerhouse but there is no guarantee that this remains the case. Science and technology are barely mentioned even though they will be instrumental in dealing with climate change, ageing, military threats to European stability and in retaining our living standards. The snapshots are a good idea but maybe there is a better example than connected cars.
