Satellite event: Citizen Science Engagement: Who Benefits and Why It Matters

This satellite event will focus on the need and importance of researchers cultivating foundational and advanced expertise in citizen science (CS), co-creation and engagement. It will emphasise the integration of CS into competency frameworks and policy strategies, showcasing its value within the contexts of open science and career development. The session will present case studies highlighting CS applications across diverse fields based on co-designed recommendations from the European Citizen Science (ECS) project and 4-helix stakeholders, as well as current international and regional research policies.
The event will explore various aspects of CS, engaging multisectoral MCAA researchers at all career stages, fostering discussions to raise awareness and co-create strategies for integrating CS into their work.
The key themes of the session are:
- Introduction to citizen science and the ECS Network of Researchers for Citizen Science (NR4CS).
- Citizen science within research culture and its broader impact.
- Showcasing CS projects across different fields, featuring real-world impact stories.
- Why do citizen science policies matter and how do they influence research? Presentation of policy work within the ECS project, including advocacy efforts to integrate CS across different countries.
- Competency frameworks for CS, highlighting the skills, values, and knowledge essential for researchers and practitioners at various levels.
