How much money NETO (after all the possible discounts) are you getting in your MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship?

2 min read Aug 12, 2022

 Dear MSCA Posdoctoral Fellowship holders,

I've been trying to figure out how much money should I receive for my POSTDOCTORAL fellowship, and I couldn't find a defined NET value. The public values without the Taxes subtraction are actually useless since every country different regulations. Many people have discussed individual cases in the different forums, then I thought it might be a good idea to establish some kind of database that we can fill with time and then use as a reference on how much we should expect or get in the different host countries.

I have uploaded an exel sheet to google drive so everybody who want to contribute can fill the information on his/her host country, bruto and net salary, taxes applied, etc.

Please, feel free to modify this table to make it more complete if you want to.

Best wishes!

Dear Juan,

I looked into your excel file. Well, I find it difficult to fill it up because the payment for the fellowship results from complicated calculations taking into account:

- the living allowance (that means, the gross amount from which the salary is calculated)

- the mobility allowance - which as far as I understood may or may not be part of the salary: as far as I understood, it can be paid for example in form of free flight tickets, it can be included in the salary with all deductions that are coming into consideration, it may also, I suppose, be given as a lumpsum by some employing institutions. This, actually, depends on the employer.

- eventually, the family allowance, where the questions that apply to the mobility allowance arise again.

So in individual cases, people may know or not know what is the breakup between these different components that somehow contribute to a final amount, which can make it difficult to fill your excel sheet. And individual situations in a same country may vary...

With best wishes,

Barbara

Dear Barbara,

I am not entirely sure that your comment is accurate. Afaik, the living and mobility allowances are paid directly as a lump sum. Travel expenses should be reimbursed from the research costs of fellows.

All best,

Angelos

Dear Angelos Chronis,

Thank you for your comment. I should clarify that I did not mention any travel expenses that are research-related, which are to be paid from the research allowances. I just mentioned the possibility of the mobility allowance to be paid in different ways, as I read that the mobility allowance can be paid either as a part of the salary or in other ways, including flight rickets for the researcher's vacations.

I just ventured on this brochure here which is giving information on financial aspects of Marie Curie fellowships in the Netherlands, and which specifies that the mobility allowance can be paid in form of reimboursement of incurred expenses - of course those need to be private: https://www.rvo.nl/sites/default/files/2020/03/Financial%20Aspects%20of%20a%20Marie%20Curie%20fellowship%20in%20the%20Netherlands%20-%20March%202020.pdf

Wishing you a Happy New Year!
