What would be happened to Participation Expenses if not used up?

1 min read Jun 05, 2019

Dear all,

I am on my first year of MSC fellowship. I am curious about the participation expenses. Does anyone have experience that what would be happened to the participation expenses at the end of fellowship if it is not used up?

I checked it with Finance Office and simply got "...if the participation budget is unspent this does not go to the fellow."

Best regards

LM

Hi,

If I understood correclty your question, and as far as I know, if you do not use your expenses for i.e. conferences, trainings etc., the money will be stay with your univeristy/ institution. Thought I would highly recomment you to use them as it would be very beneficial for your career and personal development.

Dear LM,

My understanding is that the Host Institution has two choices if a Fellow does not manage to spend their budget:

1. Return the funding to the EU

2. Spend the funding at the last minute on lab disposables, books or some other small items that aren't considered an investment

In most cases, the institution will use option 2 to make use of the funding and avoid returning the money unspent to the Commission.

I would advise you and all MSCA-IF to proactively plan your use of the funding available to you, so that you benefit from it.

Regards,

Brian

Dear All,

For the Research, Training, Networking (RTN) budget, I have been advised of the following:

1. Remaining RTN funds remain at the University, which, in my case, go to the Department – although this transfer takes some time.

However,

2. MSCA IF Grantholders can still claim reimbursement even after the end of the grant/contract so long as (a) the Department agrees, (b) these activities – e.g., conferences, workshops – relate to the project, and (c) bookings and reservations were made during the lifetime of the grant/contract.

3. Grantholders can convert RTN funds into a salary increase so long as the host institution approves, although oncosts will be deducted if paid out as salary.

This information appears in the Model Grant Agreement, Ch 3, Article 6.2.B, i.e., 1. Institutiuonal costs (B.1): Types of costs – Form – Eligibility conditions – Calculation.

Best,

Paul
